Jakeman-Superhero, Part ii

“Don’t like barbed wire, boy?” a guard asked, seeing Jake cringe. “Better get used to it. You’ll probably spend your whole life looking through it.”
Jakeman would use his huge arm muscles to fling the guard in the air and leave him hanging on the razor wire, his legs kicking and birds landing on his screaming head.
Jake just shut his ears and kept moving. (Pg. 50)

Why does he imagine Jakeman at this point? Is he angry? What would happen if he answered back?

Jakeman- Superhero, Chapters 1-5

Jakeman is Jake's super comic character. He looks like a regular kid, but if he is grabbed by bad guys he morphs:
  • barbed wire comes out of his skin
  • he gains superpowers- his legs grow long and his arms grow strong

Using post-it notes mark your reading everytime Jakeman appears. Post your comments about your observations?

Jakeman Group Journal Entry #1 - Student A

This powerful story is about Jake and his sister, Shoshona, foster children who travel four times a year in a state provided bus to visit their mom in prison in up-state New York. Jake would love to be like his comic character, Jakeman, who he has created to fix his problems. Issues: foster care, prison life, adult pre-conceived ideas, treatment of inmates, children's fears and experiences dealing with difficult emotional issues.
